My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is full of all kinds of creatures but none of them are human. There are goblins, elves, trolls, faeries and gnomes just to name a few. Some are kind creatures and others are cruel and violent.

Avari is a Water Nix, his people are called Nixen and they resemble large fish from their stomach down. Avari and his colony are facing a life threatening disaster. A sudden storm of ice and snow is starting to freeze the lake they live in. Once the lake is totally covered in ice they will have no oxygen and will eventually suffocate. The Elders of the colony realize this weather is unnatural and determine it is being caused by black magick and something must be done to stop it.

Avari is one season short of his Rite of Passage, a time when for one week he must live on dry land and when he returns he is considered an adult. When the Elders ask for volunteers to head into the mountains to find the Dark Faerie causing the weather Avari asks to go. At first he is turned down due to not being an adult but when he asks to have his Rite of Passage early so his passage becomes more than a mere ritual. He is given the okay to join Nuraa and Charill in the search. As males they have the ability to shift, giving them feet and legs.

While the three Nix are facing all kinds of danger, the weather, an avalanche, and attacks by creatures they have neverm seen the colony is facing enormous hardship and time is ticking. The waterfall in the lake has frozen solid, ice is forming all around the lake and on it making it impossible for anyone to venture outside. The younger Nix have collected as much oxygen as they can to fill the cavern under the lake but with one hundred fifty Nix it may not last very long. They are all crowded together in a small space making things even more difficult.

If Avari makes it back to the colony he will definitely have proved himself a man. Anything and everything is going against Avari, Nuraa and Charill. Just as they overcome one obstacle, another jumps up to take its place. They get rid of vicious trolls and then have to face Ice Phantoms. They know that failure is not an option because it would mean the death of their entire colony. They will do anything to make sure that doesn’t happen.

When Nuraa and Charill are injured by the Ice Phantoms, and have to turn back Avari finds himself alone. But luck is on his side when an Elven woman, also injured by the phantoms, offers to help.

Lives are at stake and time is running out. Can the Dark Faerie be found in time? Can an injured Elven woman and a young Nixen bring down an evil Dark Faerie?

This is a tale of courage and determination and proves that heroes come in all sizes and ages.

I am not a lover of fantasy books but I enjoyed this one.

Reviewed By: Linda Tonis

Member of the Paranormal Romance Team
