Sleep Deprivation


Sleep deprivation is a huge problem for a lot of people in this day and age. Some people view it as a joke, but it isn’t. Not by a long shot. For some of us, and I’m speaking of authors such as myself here, it can be an even bigger problem. Writers don’t live, or work, by set hours or schedule. Inspiration strikes when it strikes. Authors are known for early mornings, long days, and long nights of work. We sometimes push ourselves very hard, writing and writing and writing, for many hours, or even days. Some authors fuel themselves with caffeine or sugar to keep going. Sleep? I’ll do that once this draft of my current manuscript is finished!

Anyone who is a writer will also be perfectly aware of the late-night striking of inspiration that comes after you’re in bed, and trying to sleep. Your brain will spark with an idea out of seemingly nowhere. And you know that if you don’t write it down just then, you’ll have forgotten it in the morning. So you sit up, turn on a light, intending only to scribble down the new idea on the notepad you keep by your bedside for time like this. But then while jotting one idea down, something related occurs to you. And you write it down. Then something else. Then more. And more. Next thing you know, you’re putting together an entire story outline in the wee hours of the morning, rather than sleeping.

That’s very dangerous. Sleep deprivation can lead to, or make worse, a very broad spectrum of health issues. These run the range from purely physical issues, to purely mental ones, and things that bridge the gap between the two. Sleep deprivation isn’t a joke. Far from it. It’s something very dangerous that everyone ought to be wary of.
